Workplace Bullying

| Aug 8, 2007

Bullying is a form of workplace violence. It is an offensive behavior, a grab for control, and an exercise of power that attempts to undermine an individual through humiliation. Bullying is cruel, and malicious conduct that takes the form of verbally, psychologically, and/or physically hurting someone.

One in six employees have been bullied. In the last six months, one in ten employees has been bullied, and one in five employees has seen a coworker bullied. (These are the reported facts, there are certainly stats that go unreported.)

Numbers like these are astonishing, but without any legislation and increasingly stressful workplaces, incidences are only growing. Currently, there is no occupational health and safety legislation in Canada that specifically deals with bullying in the workplace.

If you are being bullied at work, do something about it, or you will be walked-over for ever.

Plan for the worst, hope for the best.
