Power Nap!

| Sep 26, 2007

When I was in Beijing I noticed lots of folks at the office taking power naps in the afternoon right at their desks :-), so it is worthy of a log.

The daily 9 to 5 grind (well, 9-5 if you’re lucky) can be extremely exhausting on the body and mind. With much more demand put on us to be productive worker bees, the amount of effort we put into our jobs has increased. Subsequently, the amount of sleep we get keeps decreasing. In the workplace you are expected to be alert, hard working, and above all, useful. But in the afternoon when energy levels in the body are lowered, reaction times are slowed and general productivity decreases, what happens then? It?_Ts time for a power nap.

The definition of a power nap varies, but officially, a power nap is a short nap, anywhere from 15 to 50 minutes. Twenty minutes is the optimum time for a power nap, while fifty minutes is the longer version for those who need the extra rest.

Now, even though afternoon naps are generally considered for kids and the elderly, I am most certainly in favour of them making a comeback! If we are more alert, more focused, and ready to tackle our afternoon challenges by having a few sleepy minutes to ourselves, then why not?

Some people are starting to become more accepting towards the idea of the almighty power nap. And you see more and more companies have rest rooms in their facilities. Dudes, who knows, the next time you?_Tre caught sleeping on the job, maybe it?_Tll be encouraged :-).
