Opus One
In the last decade, the TV series “60 minutes” has twice aired a report on a phenomenon known as the French Paradox — the fact that the French have a lower rate of heart disease than Americans, despite a diet that’s higher in fat. Since the one thing the American diet lacks, in comparison to the French diet, is red wine, some researchers were looking for a link between the consumption of red wine and decreased rate of heart disease. Not suprisingly, in the year following this report, Americans increased their purchases of red windes by 40%. Now currently there are over 300K of acres of red and over 200K acres of white grapes planted in California.
Anyway, all this pre-something! is to say that yesterday I bought a bottle of Robert Mondavi Opus One (no, not the expensive kind, the more affordable version :-). And the wine …, not bad, OK, really good. Aromas of vanilla and mocha with flavors of cherry, plum, and espresso. In the mouth, there is a beautiful texture, soft, low acid, full-bodied richness, and a intense finish of bittersweet, like dark chocolate, and a hint of smoke. This wine is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest is Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
Give it a try next time. Enjoy, and don’t forget to share.
