Kyepka

| Apr 2, 2007

One of the four elements of Taekwondo, besides sparring, patterns and self-defense is Kyepka (breaking boards). Once a green belt, breaking boards is an obligatory part of the exams and is certainly a popular element of Taekwondo. During testing you have to break two sets of boards — by using a hand technique, and a foot technique relevant to your belt.

The purpose of Kyepka is to measure one’s progress in development of strength, accuracy, speed, balance, willpower, and concentration. (Remember the “total concentration” theme from Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon? :-) It is very important to realize that proper technique must be used during Kyepka otherwise you will injure yourself. And proper technique is learnt by lots of practice which can lead to injuries. (The chicken and egg thing!)

Also, practicing Kyepka helps you to realize that your body itself is a very strong weapon and you too can be a lethal weapon without a weapon.
