Anger and Fear!
Though somewhat similar, the physical expressions of anger and fear are not identical. Our heart rate goes up in both anger and fear, but our skin temperature reacts differently, increasing when angry, and decreasing when frightened. That’s probably why they call us hot headed when angry, and when afraid, we’re cold and clammy.
When angry, blood flows to the hands, making it easier to grasp a weapon or to strike; heart rate increases, and a rush of adrenaline generates a pulse of energy strong enough for vigorous action.
With fear, blood rushes to the large muscles i.e. in the legs, making it easier to flee :-) — and making the face blanch as blood is shunted away form it. At the same time, the body freezes, if only for a moment, perhaps allowing time to gauge whether hiding might be a better reaction.
Now, circuits in the brain trigger hormones that put the body on alert, making it edgy and also ready for action — attention fixates on the threat at hand, the better to evaluate what response to make. Interesting, huh?
Paying attention to how anger and fear affect us personally is tremendously a good idea. Trust me!
