Email Privacy? My Ass!

| Sep 5, 2007

When using email at work, don’t write about controversial topics like religion, politics, money or sex.

One in three companies employ staff to read or analyze their outbound email. Yeap, it’s shocking, but it’s true, and it happens more often that you think.

As employees, we might feel email monitoring breaches our privacy, but what you are unaware of is that in the workplace, our privacy is minimal. We have no rights to our e-mail. The systems, computers, offices and chairs belong to the company. Even if we use our personal email account, it doesn’t matter, it matters where we’re sitting. Email belongs to the employer and not the employee.

An asshole boss once told me the ability to use their computer system was a privilege not a right and that privilege could be revoked any time. :-)

So, if you don’t want the whole world to read what you’re writing about, don’t put it down in email. Be warned, the big brother is watching!
