Dress Codes
The question of what to wear to a particular event is not something we tend to ponder too deeply or try to answer too far in advance but in order to save us the embarrassment, it’s best we crack the dress code in advance so not to make fools of ourselves. Let me take a stab at it since I have a couple of lined up:
Black Tie: This means wearing a tuxedo; a white, cuffed shirt; a bow tie and a vest; a white handkerchief in the breast pocket; black socks; black patent leather shoes.
Black Tie Optional: Many view this as a welcome opportunity to wear Black Tie. A formal navy blue or black suit with a white French-cuffed shirt and tie is really the only optional option.
Semi-Formal: No chance to sport your tuxedo here. The safest bet is to wear a navy blue or black suit with a dress shirt and tie.
Business Attire: Never mind if you actually conduct your business from home e wearing nothing but your birthday suit, this instruction means a suit, a dress shirt and tie.
Smart Casual: Originally intended to offer us the freedom of choice, these vague commands have caused us much confusion . Today, smart casual means to wear a jacket. It might be a blazer or a sports jacket, it could be conservatively dark or flashy, but a jacket is a must. What you put with it is more open to interpretation. No need for a tie, unless you enjoy wearing one. Grey or tan-colored pants are always correct; light-colored cotton pants can also look great provided they?_Tre well coordinated. Shirts can range from a button-down collar to a polo-collared one. Add a pair of loafers and a belt to finish it off.
Enjoy.
