Dangerous Opportunity!

| Mar 12, 2007

We’re all familiar with the stereotype of the middle-aged man who trades in his car for a convertable, and his wife for a younger gal … then runs off to travel the world. Yeap, we call it midlife crisis. :-)

In the Chinese language the ideogram for crisis is made up of two characters. First character represents “danger” and the other represents “opportunity”. So the translation of crisis from Chinese is a “dangerous opportunity.”

Midlife crisis is really a mental condition that happens to many of us at some point during our lives. Some would say it is a normal part of maturing. When we are young we think we’re invinsible. We have strong bodies; and we have great personal and professional ambitions/goals. With each new decade, we move ahead toward achieving those goals. We accomplish some of them; perhaps many of them. But in most cases, we do not move ahead as fast as we would like. Some goals remain far out of reach. Then, somewhere in our middle-ages, it begins to hit us: our hair thins a bit :-), we can’t kick as high as we used to, we can’t run as fast as we could do 10-20 years ago, we’re not as flexible as we were before, some body parts begin to hurt, and we gain weight for no reason. Ouch!!!

And one day it allA sinks in…. We’re getting olllllder…. And we’re experiencing midlife crisis.!

The good thing is that midlife crisis will go away on its own if you can wait it out. We will adjust and we will get over it. That may not be good enough for many of us. To deal with midlife crisis, some of us may get involved in that “dangerous opportunity” zone. A new sports cars … new sport… maybe even an attempt to climb the mount Everest! But let’s be honest with ourselveds, who’re we kidding?

Thinking about it, maybe a change in our lifestyle is a good thing. Making a positive change is always good for us. Perhaps we simply need to get our priorities sorted out. Who knows…., but seriously, nature has a cruel way of letting us know she is still the boss!

BTW, an old proverb says “Midlife is the old age of youth and the youth of old age”.
