Control Freak! (aka a**hole)

| May 6, 2007

I had the pleasure of hearing a “big shot” admit in public that his style of management is nothing but micromanagement, and he was damn proud of it.

Some would say micromanagers are control freaks, creating a stressful work environment. And some would argue that the biggest compliment a leader will ever receive is being called a micromanager — done right, the trait brings out the best in people and products.

This reminds me of a famous quote by Robert Hare:

“The psychopath is one of the most fascinating and distressing problems of human experience.”

Ironically, such abusive bosses tend to be high achievers, perfectionists and workaholics. Oh well…
