Color of Wine

| Feb 20, 2005

One of the best ways to get an idea of the color of the wine is to et a white background — a napkin or a white tablecloth — and hold the glass of wine in front of it. The range of colors that you may see depends, of course, on whether you’re tasting a white wine or a red.

Here’re some colors beginning with the youngest wine and moving to older ones:

White Wine: pale yellow-green, straw yellow, yellow gold, gold, old gold, yellow-brown, brown

Red: purple, ruby, red, brick red, red-brown, brown

Color tells aA lot about a wine. In whites, if it has more color it means it’s older, it’s from a grape variety that gives different colors i.e. Chardonnay gives a deeper color that Riesling, and finally the wine may have aged in wood.

Something interesting to note is that as white wine ages, they gain color. Red wines, on the other hand, lose color as they age.A Interesting huh?!
