Blue Belt

| Dec 15, 2006

Tonight my son and I went testing for our blue belts. I had practiced several times per week, and worked very hard for my blue belt. I was ready.

Everything went well. I did my moves, the patterns etc. all very well.A Then came sparring time, and guess who I faced. The dude that did not ease on me my when I was injured during my green belt testing. I was pumped, and ready. As soon as I heard “sohgi” (go), I moved on him. He charged me with all his strength, butA I was ready, a jumping back kick right to his chest put him back several steps and knocked the wind out of him. Oh yeah baby, that felt good! He charged me again, but I was prepared, round-house kicks, double round-house kicks, axe kicks,A spin-turn, you name it…A . And of-course at the end of the round I was warned by the referee to for being aggressive, but this was personal!

However, I did not feel good about the sparring. Taekwondo is not about revenge. Taekwondo is about self-defence, inner strength, and good health. Sparring is about practicing your skills, not about beating someone up. We are all buddies at the Dojang, and this was and will be the last time I spar in this manner.
