Micromanager

Are you a micromanager, or do you report to a micromanager? In case you don’t know, micromanagement is a really bad style of management where the manager closely observes and controls his/her employees. The micromanager likes to monitor and assess every step taken, and possibly wants a plan/proposal from employees for every step of their work.

The micromanager is insecure, and does not trust employees. The end-result… yeap, you guess it, a stressful work environment + demotivated employees. Micromanaged workers scream inside: “Please leave me alone to do my job”, or “Why doesn’t my manager trust me?”, and they see micromanagers as controlling, dictatorial, judgmental, critical, bureaucratic, snooping … but are afraid to say anything because of possible repercussions.

If you ask a handful of managers to define their management style, none would claim to be micromanagers :-), but if you probe deeper, I bet some truth will begin to merge.

So, let me ask again: Do you micromanage?

IMO, micromanagers do not see the “big picture” because they are too busy dictating font size and controlling everyone else’s moves, and very soon they lose the respect of co-workers and fellow employees. Sometimes it could be worse :-), you could have a manager who is inconsistent, arrogant, egocentric, self-centered, and totally checked out! And if that’s the case, God help you my friend.
