Battling the Bottles

| Feb 5, 2007

As of today, buying a bottle of wine or spirits at your LCBO will cost you 20 cents more. And, you cannot simply take your old bottles back to the LCBO where you bought them from, no Sir, you have to take them back to the Beer Store.A

Ontario’s environment commissioner believes the program will be successful even if people don’t bother returning their bottles and opt to continue leaving them in the blue box. Oh yeah, that’s for sure coz there will be more money for the Government. For those that don’t know, both LCBO and the Beer Store are run by the provincial Government.

Mr. whiz kid Gord Miller believes those who look through neighborhood blue boxes will grab the liquor bottles to get the refund themselves. Yes Sir Mr. Miller, now I will have people rummaging through my garbage.A “Do you think (scavengers) are going to pass up your wine bottles?”A This is the truth, that’s exactly what he said!A

Another bright kid, the Environment Minister Laurel Broten said she believes the program would prevent 80 million bottles from ending up in landfills. Uhm,A let me think Laurel, buy the bottle from LCBO, drive to the Beer Store,A return the bottle, get 20 cents back. DidA ?_oburn a dollar worth of gas?__, and ?_owhat are the effects of the exhaust emissions on the environment??__ ever come to mind?

And why return my bottle to the Beer Store? This is like buying a bicycle and then taking it to my Opticians for repairs. Of course they both have frames!A Oh I get it; both LCBO and the Beer Store are run by the Government!

As for the Bars and Restaurants, well, these bottles are now worth money to them, thanks to the deposit paid,A so they’d have to find a secure place to house the bottles until they get returned. My recommendation is to chain the bottles in the alley-way A behind the Bar or RestaurantA :-).A

Anyway, I am done with my rant. I’m sure it’s all good. BTW, this reminds me, I’m sure I have a few empty bottles somewhere in my garage…
